What Is a Fulfillment SLA?

A fulfillment SLA sets measurable service targets and remedies; learn how to define supplier responsibilities and separate them from delivery estimates.

‍A fulfillment service-level agreement (SLA) is a written agreement that sets clear targets for a supplier or fulfillment provider. It explains how the provider's work is measured and can state what happens after a miss.

What a fulfillment SLA typically covers

A fulfillment SLA can cover each step the provider handles before carrier transit begins. It usually covers three areas:

  1. Warehousing: Time to receive and store stock.
  2. Fulfillment: Order accuracy, lead time, and on-time-in-full rate.
  3. Shipping: On-time shipping rate.

State the target and review period for each metric. Then name the remedy. When you're fulfilling dropshipping orders, those checkpoints show which provider step missed its target.

Say your warehouse promises to pack 99% of orders without errors. It also promises same-day shipping for orders placed before 2 p.m. If the agreement provides one, a monthly miss can trigger a service credit. That agreed remedy gives the targets a stated consequence.

The deal covers only the supplier problems named in it, which may include stockouts when the terms cover available stock. A service credit pays the amount stated in the contract. Confirm what starts each timer and which events its exclusions remove.

What turns an estimate into a fulfillment SLA

A marketplace estimate becomes a fulfillment SLA when the seller and supplier agree to targets, reports, and remedies. A listing may show how fast the supplier expects to process an order. A written agreement can add a service credit, fee waiver, or termination right after a miss.

Before signing, run this supplier check:

  1. Test: Place orders at the volume and destinations you plan to serve.
  2. Record: Keep order and ship dates when choosing a dropshipping supplier.
  3. Promise: Use the slowest processing time, then add the carrier's transit range.

For each order, AliExpress shipping times include supplier processing and carrier travel time. Record both parts because a supplier agreement may cover only the first.

Fulfillment SLA vs. a shipping-time estimate

A fulfillment SLA sets provider targets, while a shipping-time estimate tells buyers when an order may arrive. The provider agrees to the SLA, while your store gives the estimate to the buyer.

Add the supplier's time to pack the order and the carrier's delivery range. Use that total for the checkout date, while other contract terms answer separate questions. A supplier's MOQ sets how many units you must buy, and the contract can also cover payment, returns, and stock.

FAQ

Can a dropshipper negotiate a fulfillment SLA?

Yes, a dropshipper can negotiate an SLA when a supplier or fulfillment provider accepts direct contract terms. Ask for measurable targets, a reporting method, exclusions, and a specific remedy for each missed target.

What happens if a supplier misses its processing estimate?

Your supplier agreement or the marketplace's current buyer-protection terms determine your remedy. They may provide a credit, refund, cancellation, or dispute path.

Is a fulfillment SLA the same as a shipping guarantee?

A shipping guarantee promises the buyer an arrival outcome, while a fulfillment SLA records provider-to-seller targets. A store may base its guarantee on an SLA, but it still handles the buyer-facing promise.
